- Tuition Grants (certain distance education programs only) are non-repayable, need-based tuition awards, providing up to 15% of tuition depending on student need and availability of institution's funds.
- The Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan is a low-interest, need-based loan.
- Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans are available to all students regardless of family income. The Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan is designed for students who do not qualify for Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans based on sufficient financial need (but satisfy all other eligibility criteria). The terms and conditions are the same as Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans, except that the student must pay interest on this loan during in-school and deferment periods.
- The Graduate/Professional Student PLUS loan: The recently passed Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 allows Graduate and Professional students to borrow under the Federal PLUS loan program beginning July 1, 2006. Click here to read more about this program.
It pays to make an informed decision when choosing a lender. You will be entering into a long-term relationship with the lending institution. Reasons for selecting a particular lender vary from person to person. Some will choose a lender based on name/brand recognition or reputation. Others prefer established and timely processing. Still others are interested in borrower benefits in repayment, such as an interest rate reduction as a reward for making consecutive on-time payments. We encourage students to select the lender and loan product that best meets their needs. For more information, go to financialaid.syr.edu/gradloans.htm.
