Bachelor of Professional Studies (B.P.S.) Degree in Legal Studies


Approved by the American Bar Association, this degree develops the analytic, research, and writing skills needed to qualify for employment with attorneys in different legal disciplines in a variety of interesting work environments. Learning competencies include:

  • Understanding professional conduct, ethics, legal obligations
  • Performing research, analysis, case management
  • Understanding/applying core theories of law and legal principles
  • Interviewing clients and witnesses
  • Drafting pleadings, forms, and other legal documents

A minimum of 120 credits is required to complete the degree. Courses needed to meet the degree requirements are in four categories:

Program of Study Core (32 credits)
Professional Competencies Core (30 credits)
Liberal Studies Core (31-37 credits)
Electives (21-29 credits)

The Program of Study core courses are offered on campus in the evening, while the remaining required courses may be available in various flexible formats. Please contact an academic advisor with questions regarding the courses and formats that best suit your requirements and schedule.

LGL 305—Property and Real Estate (3)
LGL 401—Civil Practice and Litigation (4) (Prerequisite: LGL 201)
LGL 471—Internship (3) (Prerequisite: senior standing)

Legal Studies Credit Certificate Program
A credit certificate in Legal Studies (26 credits) is an option that may appeal to students who prefer a shorter sequence of study. These credits can be applied later toward completion of the bachelor's degree.
